Reference Letters
A reference letter is written by the referee you provide to your prospective employer. A reference letter is a comment and a feedback on your suitability for the job applied. Some employers also use a reference letter as a tool for background check and verification of your claim. Reference letters highlight your skills, abilities and experiences from others perspectives.
Even though a job-aspirant does not much control over what the referee may choose to write about him / her, there are ways in which you can influence the content of reference letters. Ensure that:
- A chosen referee knows you well as a professional.
- A chosen referee has worked with you for a considerable period of time to understand your professional skills and abilities.
- A chosen referee should be a person who has a favorable opinion about you.
- A chosen referee should sound authentic, credible and convincing.
- A chosen referee should have good command over verbal skills – both spoken and written.
- You provide a list of your activities, achievements, interests, and plans.
- You take permission from the person before providing his/ her reference to your prospective employer.
- You inform the person of having provided him/ her as referee.
- You thank the referees for their effort and recommendation.
- You thank the referees on selection to the position.
